Transportation
Highways: The main highway and secondary roads are all paved and total 3,724 km. The gravel and clay roads total 871 km. The maximum speed limit, except for the Trans Canada Highway and other designated highways, is 80km per hour. Basic Speed limits are: 40 km/h in municiplaities 50 km/h in urban areas 60km/h in scholl zones 80km/h on most highways 90km/h on major highways Bridge / Ferry Toll Collection Travellers will pay a round trip bridge or ferry toll on existing Prince Edward Island. Tolls will be collected at the P.E.I. Toll Plazas in Borden-Carleton for the bridge, and Wood Islands for the ferry.

Confederation Bridge The 12.9 kilometer Confederation Bridge joins Borden-Carleton, Prince Edward Island and Cape Tormintine , New Brunswick. This historic bridge opened Sunday June 1, 997, bringing a new age of transportation to Atlantic Canada. The bridge carries two lanes of traffic 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and takes approximatley 10 to 12 minutes to cross at normal travelling speeds. The normal travelling speed is 80km.h. This is monitored and adjusted according to the current weather and travelling conditions All pedestrians and cyclists are required to use a shuttle bus to cross the bridge. The shuttle bus operates on a frequent, demand driven schedule. Emergency Callboxes are located at 750m intervals along the northside of the bridge and are intended for public use and safety. Lane markings have standard function as employed on all roadways, and the continuous double line indicates, PASSING IS NOT PERMITTED. There is also NO STOPPING PERMITTED on the Confederation Bridge, unless an emergency situation occurs.

Ferries There is a ferry service between Wood Islands, Prince Edward Island, and Pictou, Nova Scotia between late April to mid December, on a schedule of every hour and a half. Radio stations regularly broadcast schedules. The car ferries offer a pleasent 75 minute mini-cruise between Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
